Hi,

I’m Tim Chown.  I’m a lecturer in Computer Science at the University of Southampton in the UK.   I’ve been interested in IPv6 since 1996 when I became aware of the initiatives in the IETF to find a successor to IPv4 and some (very) early work to produce a BSD implementation of IPv6.

Since then I’ve been involved in several projects that have been focused on research, development and deployment of IPv6 protocols. In the biggest of these, 6NET, which had 30 participant universities, research networks and companies, I coordinated the IPv6 transition activities.

We have deployed IPv6 quite extensively in our departmental production network here at Southampton, which has allowed us to give good feedback and input to vendors and into the IETF.   Our externally-facing web, mail and DNS services have all supported IPv6 for many years.

As a lecturer on 2nd and 3rd year data networking courses, I include IPv6 content in our courses, and supervise a range of student projects in the area. I’m also involved in various IPv6 training and awareness initiatives, including the 6DEPLOY project, as well as giving bespoke IPv6 training for JANET(UK).
