With the IPv4 available address pool having just become exhausted it seems appropriate to dust the cobwebs off the www.ipv6.org.uk website that I’ve hosted at the University of Southampton for several years and put it to good use.

So far the site has simply been a list of IPv6-enabled web servers in the UK. While I plan to maintain this list for those interested, the new purpose of this site will be a medium for me to post news, comments and thoughts on IPv6 deployment, with a focus on things relevant to the UK.

It’s fair to say that IPv6 deployment is not exactly thriving in the UK. While the academic backbone networks have dual-stack IPv4/IPv6, none of the mainstream commercial ISPs are offering IPv6 to their end users yet. And while over 100 IPv6 site prefixes have been handed out to UK educational sites, only a handful have any significant deployment.

So it seems timely to comment on what’s happening with IPv6 deployment. One aspect of that is finding content providers who support IPv6. While I could have maintained this site at my university, I thought I’d see what was available commercially. After all, supporting IPv6 access to a simple blogging-style site should be pretty routine. But surprisingly the only ‘name’ web hosting company I could find that could do this for me was Dreamhost, and so this site is hosted with them.

I’ll be posting as and when any interesting issues come up, and on the lookout for any IPv6 news specific to the UK. Feel free to contact me if you have any ideas or suggestions for content.
